NewAir Outdoor Misting Fan Review

My family loves spending quality time outside during the spring and summer months. One issue we have been faced with more than past years, however, is that it gets really, really hot. Just the other day, towards the beginning of May, it was so hot that it was a relief once the weather cooled down to 88ºF at 7 PM. Being from Wisconsin, I am still not really used to this heat, so the NewAir Outdoor Misting Fan has been a great way to stay cool.

The NewAir AF-520B model is an innovative fan that mists water as it blows cool air. It cools up to 500 sq. ft.

What I Love

There are so many things I love about this fan. Of course, the first thing I would say is how awesome the misting feature is. Cooling off with a nice breeze and a light spray of water is a lifesaver in the hot weather.

My kids love the misting feature too. For them, they love being sprayed in the face when they get near it. Because it has such a far reach, the boys can play in the yard freely without getting overheated. To us, that means more time we can enjoy outside where we would otherwise come in after a short period of time to cool down.

The water hose hooks up to the fan and you are able to turn the water on and off. If it is already a moist day but you still want a breeze, you can use just the fan part. The water sprays out of three nozzles on the front of the fan and the fan blades spread it. 

Just like any other fan, you have the option to keep it stationery or to make it oscillate. The fan head even tilts and you can adjust the height. There are three speeds which will blow more air and water or less. The buttons are easy to push and really take no effort at all.

I was expecting this fan, as big as it is (18-inch diameter), to be very loud. On the contrary. This fan is actually incredibly quiet and I actually find the soft hum to be calming. The overall quality is just awesome. The fan was fairly easy to assemble–I did it myself–and even easier to use. It has even been constructed to withstand the elements so you can keep it outside. 

When I was little, I used to love talking into the fan to make my voice sound robotic. My son enjoyed doing the same thing.

Disclaimer: Please keep kids away from the fan. My son knows the rules and I would not let him get very close. Do not put fingers inside the cage and do not get your face or hair too close to the back of the fan or bad things could happen.

Keep in mind that since this is spraying water, you will need to reapply sunscreen regularly as with any time you get wet.

What I’m Not Huge On

The only improvement I would really like to see is for this fan to come with a pin to clean the nozzles. As much as the filter on the hose attachment helped, we still had some gunk from our really bad water sneak through and clog the nozzles. We had a pin that worked OK to clean it out. The instructions do share general cleaning instructions telling you to soak them in vinegar for 2 hours (we did not have the 2 hours to wait, but I am sure it works great.)

I also did struggle to remove the cap on one of the instructions steps. I finally realized it was just spinning and spinning and needed to be held down then removed, but the instructions were not particularly clear on that. I found the trick to taking it off is to use something between it and your hand (I used the plastic from the packaging.) Obviously I was still able to complete assembly on my own, but it would have been great to have an “if you are struggling to remove this, try….”

Overall, the NewAir Outdoor Misting Fan is a high-quality fan that keeps you cool and comfortable. It is easy to assemble and easy to use.
