Recently I received a new recipe book from Parragon Books called Clean & Green. I was so excited to try it out and we were able to make a couple of the drinks in the book already.

What I Love
Clean, nutritious eating is something that I have been working to do more of in my life. I have wanted to try “green” recipes and juicing for some time now, but have not known where to start. This book has tons of tips and tricks it shares throughout , from why green foods are good for you to how to choose your juicing equipment to information on nutrient boosters and health (like preventing colds or muscle pains.) There are even quick tips on most recipes.
As an aspiring food photographer, I love the pictures. Most are very moody which just always seems to make things look more delicious. I also noticed, after making a couple recipes, that there are little pictures of what your ingredients should look like.
Clean & Green has recipes for juices, smoothies, shots, and even soups! The recipes are categorized in the following four sections: Green to Cleanse, Green to Glow, Green to Detox, and Green to Sooth. Each section shares recipes to help various issues you may be having or satisfy specific needs you may have such as give you energy, boost your immune system, combat stress, or reduce heartburn.
We decided to try the Melon, Pear & Ginger Spritzer and the Muscular Magic recipes from the Clean & Green book.
The Melon, Pear & Ginger Spritzer had a fresh flavor. The ginger gave it a nice touch. I do feel I put too much spritzer in or I would have enjoyed it more, but the directions did not specify a ratio of juice to spritzer. Next time I will add more juice with a splash of spritzer.
Yesterday we made the Muscular Magic smoothie which has so much to it that it’s pretty much a full meal…and a good portion of your fruit and veggie servings for the day. It actually tasted pretty good, but I probably wouldn’t drink a whole glass of it. I think I might enjoy it more a little bit chilled, perhaps add a little more ice. This recipe did have a lot that went into it, so I don’t think I could make it very often.
I really want to try the Grapefruit Crush recipe sometime. It looks very refreshing!
What I’m Not Huge On
In general, I am not a big fan of “green” recipes so I didn’t completely love the recipes we tried, but I am also not used to drinking them. I really think they could grow on me, especially as I try the recipes in this book and find the ones I really love.
The recipes in the book did have a lot of ingredients, many expensive or that the average person (like myself) would not even know where to find. If you are an avid juicer and love healthy eating, this book is for you, not as much for a novice.
I did find that some of the recipe instructions, at least on the two recipes we made, seemed incomplete or just not very clear. I tend to over-think things, so I did not know how much of the sparkling water to use in the spritzer or what “1/2 Romaine Lettuce” referred to. This may have contributed to why we yielded a whole lot more than the one serving the recipe says it will make.
Overall, I will definitely be trying more of the recipes in Clean & Green as I want to start using our juicer more, but I would not say this book is for the beginner. If you are already familiar with juicing, have all the equipment, and love making “green” foods, I would recommend this book to you for sure.
