If you are looking for a super cool Christmas gift for a lucky child in your life, look no further than the Daisy Red Ryder BB Gun! These BB guns don’t just make great gifts for boys, even my little sister loved the Red Ryder 75th Anniversary Edition BB gun we got for her from Bass Pro Shop! They also had a pink version and even one with a scope! (Click here to visit the Daisy website.)
Now, you may be thinking, “How is a BB gun a good gift??” Well, this BB gun will be more than just something your child opens. It will provide great bonding opportunities for you and your kids. The Red Ryder 75th Anniversary edition is for kids ages 10 and up and should be used with adult supervision. This means that you will be with your child when he/she uses it! Take this opportunity to play some fun shooting games like Tic Tac Toe! My little sister played with my husband who she does not see often and they took turns using the gun.
To play Tic Tac Toe, we made a game board on an empty cardboard box and set the box up on the patio ledge facing a wide open area. We put a jug of water inside to hold it down so it didn’t fall over. Then we placed sticky targets two per square, one labeled with “x” and the other with “o.”
The game was played just like Tic Tac Toe; each took turns and shot the letter they chose trying to get three in a row while blocking the opponent from getting three in a row first. For the letter to count, the hole had to be on the target with their letter on it. If either missed, it would not count giving the opponent an advantage. The first with three in a row wins! This is also a great way to improve hand-eye coordination.
Even though this is only a BB gun, it is still a gun, so please exercise safety precautions. I grew up shooting guns and safety has always been a top priority. Do not point the gun or shoot at people or animals. Be aware of your surroundings, where you are using the gun and what is behind the target you are shooing at, to ensure loose BB’s do not hit someone walking behind the target or ricochet back to the shooter. Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes and mind the minimum age for use and adult supervision advisory on the packaging. Daisy educates roughly one million of America’s youth a year through their Ten Lesson Shooting Curriculum about BB gun use and safety (found here). This curriculum has been around since 1948 and is a great place to start.
Daisy works through partnerships with organizations like National Wild Turkey’s JAKES Take Aim, 4-H National Shooting Sports, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Royal Rangers, Youth Shooting Sports Alliance, Civilian Marksmanship, NRA, JROTC units, scouting, fish and game as well as church and private camps. They also offer portable, inflatable BB gun ranges. You can find these at major outdoor sporting goods retailers and leading conservation organizations.
