DIY Flamingo Candy Cane Craft | Unconventional Christmas Decor

This year, I decided to host my first Christmas party. It was a special party just for us moms—a break away from the kids and the busyness of the holiday season. The theme—Alice in Winter Wonderland! As part of the theme, I made this cute DIY Flamingo Candy Cane Craft for Christmas (which will also work for a Tropical Christmas theme or Coastal Christmas Theme).

Flamingos seem to be more and more included in Christmas decorations. In fact, I’ve found entire desert and tropical Christmas decor sections at stores! Flamingos will fit right in with your non-traditional Christmas decor.

Oh, and of course you can use leftover Christmas candy canes to make this a New Year’s craft…and start the year off on the right foot. (Get it? I couldn’t resist!)

As I planned my Alice in Winter Wonderland Party (*I’ve shared more photos and a video towards the end of the post!*), I racked my brain trying to remember different parts of the book/movie Alice in Wonderland to come up with little Christmas variations. I remembered how the Queen of Hearts used flamingos to play croquet. I didn’t want to do anything quite so mean, so I made flamingos with snowballs (white Sixlets candies). To be even Christmassier (it’s a word…I invented it just now), I made the flamingos out of candy canes.

Make this yourself or involve the kids! If you are working with the kids, use the hot glue gun and let them place the pieces on when they’ve cooled a little. You’ll also want to assemble the beak yourself. You can also try a low-heat glue gun, and may even be able to use school glue for the eye and wing.

Supplies Needed

Directions

Trace and cut the beaks and wings out of the pink construction paper.

Carefully hot glue one outside edge of the beak piece, then fold it onto itself to make a cone. Hold until the glue is dried. Take care not to burn yourself. I like to use a wide pair of scissors as a form. This helps me shape and hold the beak better without burning myself.

Using a black permanent marker, color the tip of the beak black.

Leave some pink area at the end.

Place the beak on the curved end of the candy cane to see how it fits, and trim as needed.

Add a dab of hot glue to the curved end of the candy cane, then stick on the pink and black beak.

Glue one tiny eye onto the top of the beak area, then glue one of the wings to the long end of the candy cane across from the beak.

If desired, you can add another eye and wing to the other side. I really only needed the eye and beak on one side.
