Angel Sandwich Christmas Lunch Idea for Kids

Call me “one of those Pinterest moms” if you want, but I absolutely love preparing fun treats for my boys (when I have the energy). Sometimes I do more elaborate treats and other times it’s way simpler than it looks. One of my favorites to date is this Angel Sandwich Christmas lunch idea for kids.

A couple years ago I shared my Turkey Sandwich lunch idea (below) and it has been a huge hit ever since with my readers. It doesn’t require any special sandwich cutters and is simple to prepare. I figured my readers might want more, so I created several more easy sandwich ideas to share with you, starting with this Angel Sandwich.

You’ll love my Turkey Sandwich lunch idea!

This fun sandwich idea is perfect for your child’s lunchbox (you can even set it up as “build your own angel” and send everything separately), or a fun lunch during winter break, or as a special meal for the kids on Christmas (in place of Christmas dinner or in addition to it)! Once I cut the bread, my boys love helping decorate the sandwich.

Angel Sandwich Christmas Lunch Idea for Kids

What you need:

  • Two slices of bread plus whatever fillings you desire in between (we keep it simple…pb&j or deli meat with or without cheese)
  • American cheese (the white variety) or provolone cheese (you can do mozzarella cheese as well, but it will be more challenging to get everything the size you need to fit, so you may need to piece it together)
  • Two pink confetti sprinkles (alternatively you can use a pink edible ink pen)
  • Black edible ink pen
  • Two pieces of mandarin oranges/tangerine, peeled (I used fresh ones rather than canned)
  • Yellow mini sweet pepper (these typically come in a bag…make sure it’s the sweet kind and not the extra hot kind 😉 )
  • Mini marshmallow (or an almond or whatever else you want the angel to be holding)
  •

    Directions

Prepare your sandwich as you like it. Keep it simple and compact so it doesn’t make a big mess when you cut it. Remember you’ll be adding cheese and veggies to the top, so you may not need more inside the actual sandwich.

Use a decently sharp knife to cut the sandwich. You’ll want to do small, choppy cuts so you don’t pull all the filling out or tear the bread. I do this on a cutting board to avoid a mess. Cut a head and dress shape out from the center and you’ll be left with two wing shapes! It’s really that easy.

Place the sandwich on the plate you plan to serve it on; make sure the plate is big enough to fit the angel pieced together.

Cut the cheese (*cue snickering from the mom of boys*). The pre-sliced-for-sandwiches white variety of American cheese works best because of it’s appropriate size, shape, and thickness compare to the sandwich. You can see the cuts I made on mine in the picture below.

Basically I cut the cheese (*giggles*) the same way I did for the bread, but I made the body part very small. The cheese wings should be about the same size and shape as the bread wings, only a little smaller. If you wish, you can use the tip of your knife to add some feathery detail to the wings.

Place the cheese wings on the sandwich on top of the bread wings. Using the extra cheese that is left over, cut out a small circle shape for the face and two angled rectangles for the arms. I cut the rectangles with one end angled so it would look like the angel was holding something in the center of its body.

Add eyes and a sweet smile to the round face shape using the black edible ink marker. The face should be a little lower down on the circle so the “hair” doesn’t cover it (but not too low).

Add two pink sprinkles (or dots using a pink edible ink marker), one at either end of the smile, so it looks like the angel has rosy cheeks.

Place the mandarin oranges at the top of the angel’s head, slightly overlapping if you can, so the angel has a pretty head of orange hair.

Cut the yellow pepper on its side so it makes a thick ring shape from the center. You will want it maybe half an inch thick so it stands up high enough, but not too high. Remove any seeds as necessary. Place it above the angel’s head then place the marshmallow between its hands so it appears to be holding the marshmallow.

Since I don’t like to waste things and I need to make sure my boys are getting the proper servings of each food group, I usually serve the extra cheese, orange, pepper, and whatever else I need to include to make the meal balanced after they have eaten their fun food.
