Science and Math Activities with Remote Control Cars for Kids

You grab the remote in your hand. You feel powerful. You can race your car all over, pretty much where ever you want to, as fast as you can. You can watch it launch off of ramps and flip through the rocks. But this also is a great opportunity to try some science and math activities with remote control cars for kids.

We’ve partnered with Mirum for this super fun Hot Wheels sponsored post. All opinions are my own.

In this house, we love turning anything we can into an educational experience. We bond while we learn. My boys and my husband were excited to get outside and learn and play with the Hot Wheels Ballistik Racer.

The Hot Wheels Ballistik Racer is perfect for all-terrain use. It can go very fast and do all sorts of stunts, twisting and turning in the air. Test out different button combinations to unlock exciting stunts. Some to try are the Instant Pivot Turn and the 180° Spin!

This remote control car for kids is dual-sided, so it is always right-side up. The hex-molded designs on the wheels help to stabilize the remote control vehicle on various surfaces, whether it’s driving through the rocks, rolling on the grass, or speeding down the blacktop.

Calculating MPH

We wanted to find out who could race the Hot Wheels Ballistic Racer remote control vehicle the fastest, so we set up a sort of “drag strip” to calculate the speed.

Using a tape measure, we measured out 25 feet on the flat blacktop (we planned to do 60 feet, but the further out it got, the more inaccurate the calculations were as the kids couldn’t get it to go perfectly straight.). We marked the starting point and the finish line.

I stood at the start line with the kids and my husband stood at the finish with a stopwatch (really, we just used our phones, but an actual stopwatch works great too.).

My husband called out, “Ready, set, go!” and the kids zoomed off with the Ballistik. Once it passed the finish line, my husband hit stop on the stopwatch and called out the time for me to record. Here are some of our initial results:

E:
1st round = 25ft @ 3.15 seconds
2nd round = 25ft @ 2.83 seconds

S:
1st round = 25ft @ 3.55 seconds
2nd round = 25ft @ 3.41 seconds

Then we had to calculate the miles per hour. There are 5280 feet in a mile, so our 25ft equals about 0.005mi. Then we had to convert the seconds to hours; there are 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour, so there are 3600 seconds in an hour so one second is about 0.0003hrs.

We took out a calculator to figure out our times in hours:

E1 = 0.0009 hours
E2 = 0.0008 hours
S1 = 0.0011 hours
S2 = 0.0010 hours

Now we divide 0.005 mile by their times in hours:

E1 = 5.56 mph
E2 = 6.25 mph
S1 = 4.55 mph
S2 = 5.00 mph

Surface Testers

Test how the Hot Wheels Ballistik Racer rides on different surfaces. Try timing to figure out speed on tracks with different textures. Here are some fun surfaces to try:

  • Blacktop/asphalt
  • Grass
  • Dirt
  • Rocks/gravel
  • Light snow or ice
  • Damp blacktop
  • Concrete
  • Linoleum
  • Wooden boards
  • Carpet
  • Just keep in mind when you go from surface to surface that it may make things a little messy. You may not want to go from damp surface to dirt to carpet.

    We tried ours out on blacktop, concrete, dirt, gravel, and grass. The boys were able to see how the remote control vehicle reacted on different surfaces.

    On dirt/gravel surfaces, this remote control car for kids did a lot of wheel spinning, flipping, and drifting where it drove much straighter on the blacktop and concrete surfaces. Let your kids make predictions or hypotheses before each surface so they can guess what they think will happen. Will it flip? Will it get stuck? Will it drive faster than ever?

    Stunt Driving

    While we were out on the hill behind our house driving the Ballistik Racer through the dirt and gravel, we tried driving it through small “trenches” and over mounds and rock ramps. Try different button combinations and see what happens to the vehicle when you use each button. Try finding the best way to jump off of the ramps and spin and flip through the trenches.

    Discuss the reactions for each button combination and surface. See if you can replicate it then see if you can get even better at it! If you get the remote control vehicle to go fast enough, does the “turn left to go right” really work? Can you jump a ramp and spin the car at the same time? Try out Ballistik Mode for a real challenge to sharpen your remote control skills.

    Obstacle Course

    Can your racer make it through different obstacle courses you set up?

    Set up an obstacle course with different barriers such as ramps, cones (or pumpkins if it’s really windy), tunnels, and different surfaces. Time how long it takes to get through. Who can get through the fastest? Can you find the best, fastest way to get through the most challenging barriers such as weaving through the cones? Try to see who can get the most air off of the ramp.

    If you have older children, you can discuss angles and trajectory and the laws of motion. There is so much to discover and learn with the Ballistik Racer remote control vehicle.
