“Heart Box” Keepsake Valentine’s Day Gift for Kids

Family Dollar has such a great variety of products for Valentine’s Day and year-round, so I am happy to partner with them on this sponsored post to share our “Heart Box” Valentine’s Day Gift for Kids with you.

Valentine’s Day is a special time of year. It gives you the opportunity to give something to others and let them know how very important they are to you. I especially love coming up with special gifts for my boys. This “Heart Box” Valentine’s Day Gift for Kids is one of those extra-memorable gift ideas that the kids will treasure for years to come.

We have done gifts similar to this “Heart Box” before, and it is always a hit, so I decided to make the boys this keepsake box just for Valentine’s Day. The purpose is to offer gifts that are meaningful, tangible, and also lasting.

For this Valentine’s Day gift for kids, we made a trip to our local Family Dollar. They have such a fun Valentine’s Day selection with candies, stuffed animals, and other adorable novelty products like coffee mugs. The boys tagged along with me and helped me look through everything and they really enjoyed the trip. We found so many great Valentine’s Day gifts.

We shopped the whole store, looking for their “$1 WOW” deals and products with Smart Coupons. Smart Coupons are digital coupons that can be clipped online and added to your account. They will automatically come off your purchase when you check out using the phone number associated with your account.

Whenever possible, I limit the amount of candy the kids receive and instead choose items that are purposeful and can be enjoyed for a longer period of time.

Family Dollar had some really neat toys, like a Crystal Growing kit that makes a wonderful STEM education gift. I had a blast shopping for Valentine’s Day gifts for kids and adding them to our “Heart Box.” We started with one of their “$1 WOW” plastic shoe box storage containers.

Take a look inside our keepsake box:

  • Valentine’s Day stuffed animal
  • Light-up heart pen
  • Valentine’s Day mug with heart-shaped marshmallows
  • Hot cocoa packets
  • Chocolate kisses (These have a Smart Coupon through 2/19/17.)
  • Colored gel pens
  • Small notebook
  • Silly String
  • Grow Your Own Crystal kit
  • Kids’ white t-shirt
  • Colored craft sticks
  • Chocolate heart maze
  • Solar-powered dancing dog
  • Color-in sticky notes

Each item I chose for this “Heart Box” Valentine’s Day gift idea has a purpose. A meaning. They are all something meant to make a lasting impression.

The “Heart Box” is more than just a box full of goodies. It is a box full of bonding opportunities and experiences for you and your kids and a reminder to them of how you love them. It is a box to be filled with memories.

On the sticky notes, I added things that I love about my kids or things that I love to do with them:

The Grow Your Own Crystal Kit was paired with “I love to watch you grow.” We will grow the crystals together as a fun activity, just us, then they can keep the crystal in the box and pull it out any time and remember that special time we had.

The Silly String was paired with “You make me laugh.” We will have a fun time spraying the Silly String all over and laughing and laughing. I plan to try having them spray a heart shape on some parchment paper using this and baking it for a short time at a low temperature or seeing if it will dry out on its own so we can save a small part of this memory in the “Heart Box” as well. If it works as planned, you can watch for a tutorial post on this!

The t-shirt I included, all pre-decorated. When I was in first grade, the grade that E is in right now, my mom made me a Valentine’s Day t-shirt and to this day I wear it every Valentine’s Day. I wanted to do this for my boys as well, so I made theirs in colors that are some of their favorites and we will wear them together. They sneaked a peak and are very excited about them!

Some of the other notes I included in the boxes were:

  • “Let’s have a cocoa date!” (We will use the mugs, cocoa, and marshmallows to have a special cocoa date together to talk and laugh and smile over a warm cup of hot chocolate.)
  • “You make me dance.”
  • “I just love spending time with you.”
  • “I’m so glad you’re part of my story.”
  • “You light up my life.”
  • “I love your hugs.”
  • “You are so smart.”
  • “I love your creativity.”
  • “You are a great brother.”
  • “I love your big, brown eyes.”

The list goes on.

Find things you love about your kids–both physical, like their beautiful eyes that are just like Mommy’s or Daddy’s, as well as things about their personality, like their creativity and things they do that make you proud. You can be specific or a little more general, but make sure it comes from the heart.

Rather than placing the sticky notes on each item, I opted to stick them all together and set them on top in the box, so when the boys open the box that will be the first thing they see.

On top of the box, I wrote “My Heart Box” and we will add their names after.

To keep the lid on better and make the box a little more fun to open, I added coordinating fabric ribbon. You can even decorate them more with wrapping paper or stickers or glitter or glue buttons along the outside–have fun with it! I will let my boys decorate theirs as they wish.

Once these boxes are opened, we will do these fun activities together then the items that can be placed back inside the box will remain there. The boys can store their “Heart Box” in their room, near the bed or in the closet, and pull it out when they want to cherish those memories all over again. The words will encourage them even as they grow older.

If you have room left afterwards, the kids can continue to add items to this “Heart Box” like hand-written letters from you, things they collect on family vacations, and more.

Initially, you may find it challenging to fill up this “Heart Box” with these Valentine’s Day gift ideas. You may need to try different things until you get everything to fit. Here are some images of how I managed to fit everything. Some items were removed from their packages to save on space.
