Upcycled Christmas Wrapping Paper Tree Centerpiece

The Christmas season shows up with a slew of gifts. You wrap them. They unwrap them. You waste a whole lot of Christmas wrapping paper through it all with the scraps that don’t quite fit the size and shape of the gifts you wrap and the enormous amounts after everything is all said and done. Well, I don’t love wasting that wrapping paper. There are tons of fun things you can do with it, even temporarily–a wrapping paper snowball fight, fold up the nice pieces and re-use them, use certain kinds as a fire starter, stuff it in a pillow for a crinkly sensory activity…

But this time, this time I wanted to make something we could keep. Something to upcycle the Christmas wrapping paper. Something that would spruce up our space as a fabulous Christmas decoration. I thought…”how adorable would a crumpled wrapping paper tree look?!

Krazy Glue challenged me to get a little krazy this holiday season, and I thought an Upcycled Christmas Wrapping Paper Tree would make an adorable and unique table centerpiece. Make a few or just add one with some Christmas or winter decorations around it.

I am so excited to partner with Krazy Glue for this sponsored post and share my super quirky Christmas craft tutorial with you. All opinions are my own.

You can make this to fit your style too. I love plaid and candy cane wrapping paper with jingle bells and twine, so that’s how I decorated mine. You could use ribbon and glitter and pinks and lime greens and sequins or gems–go krazy with it! That’s sorta the point.

Crafts are sort of an obsession of mine. I use super glue all the time because it is awesome. Krazy Glue has a wide assortment of glue options so you can find just what you need for your projects, and it works well for newbie crafters and pros alike. For this krazy Christmas Wrapping Paper Tree table topper I used the No Run Gel and the Brush-On glue.

Krazy Glue is perfect for this project. It needed something that dries quickly and holds well. Krazy Glue dries in just 30 seconds! The gel variety works well with the foam cone as it is thicker than the original Krazy Glue. I also used the brush-on version for this craft. While this craft may not be heavy, it does need to hold tight, and that is definitely achieved with Krazy Glue, which can hold up to 2000 lbs with just one drop! It’s basically a crafter’s super hero. I have a couple other projects on my to do list that will be a bit heavier, so I’ll be using Krazy Glue.

Directions

1. Tear the wrapping paper scraps into square pieces. Mine were around 1 1/2″ square. Loosely crumple them up.

2. Add a little glue to the back of the crumpled up pieces of Christmas wrapping paper and stick them onto the foam cone. Hold them there for 30 seconds to make sure they stick okay. I started at the bottom and worked my way up, randomly alternating the wrapping paper patterns.

Tip: in some places the glue may soak through the holes in the foam cone, so you may want to try a light layer of paint over the cone (let it dry completely) before gluing on the wrapping paper. I just went right to the wrapping paper, but I used a little more glue this way.

3. Once all the Krazy Glue is dried and the wrapping paper covers the entire cone, you can begin decorating! I used Krazy Glue to attach one end of a string of twine on the bottom of the cone between wrapping paper. Keep it in place for at least 30 seconds (I pressed part of some wrapping paper over it.).

4. String on the decorations. If you are using jingle bells or beads, slide them onto the twine/string/whatever it is you are using then wrap it around the tree like garland then add a little Krazy Glue here and there to make sure the jingle bell garland stays in place. If you want to add other decorations, glue them on in place. Glue down the loose end of the string too.

5. I wanted to add a shiny star at the top. Since I was going for something quirky, unique, and completely krazy awesome, I had my son draw a star shape for me. To save on craft supplies and upcycle, we used the cardboard backing from the Krazy Glue package.

He drew a special star then I cut it out and brushed on glue to small sections at a time and quickly sprinkled on glitter.

Keep adding small sections of glue and sprinkling on glitter, lightly pressing down on the glitter so it sticks, until the entire front side of the star is covered. Let it dry completely.

6. Bend a paper clip so the long end points down then bend the top in half so the rounded area will fit behind the star.

7. Add glue to the top, bent part of the paper clip then carefully attach the star, pressing and holding for at least 30 seconds.

8. Once the glue is completely dried, carefully stick the long end of the paper clip into the top of the tree, pushing it into the foam cone.

Make more if you wish or keep the one tree with some fun decorations around it. Most of all, make it krazy. Make it krazy cute. Have fun with it!

  1. Your tree turned out so cute! This is such a great way to re-use your wrapping paper.

  2. What an adorable idea! Super cute and I LOVE that it reuses the wrapping paper. I’m always looking for ways to reuse and/or up-cycle. Great idea! πŸ™‚

  3. This is adorable! I am going to try it! I am going to use a cardboard cone though, as I don’t like how glue sometimes seeps through foam! oh and p.s. to the person who said this was trash, they obviously have no appreciation for up cycling or eclectic beauty!
