I know I’m probably crazy, but I like to sit in front of a heater year-round. I am almost always cold. My husband, on the other hand, likes when things stay cool. Living in the South, our weather is always going back and forth from chilly to burning-up hot. Seriously. It’s towards the end of fall and this week’s forecast starts with a high of 48ºF today (currently at 34ºF) and will get up to at least 73ºF by the end of the week. So…how do we deal with it?
Since my husband won’t let me have the house’s heat on all the time, I have to use a stand-alone heater. When I was in college, my dorm room had a room heater that was attached to the wall…just to explain how crazy I am, I used to go sit by that heater every day and would eventually fall asleep slouched over on top of it. Good thing it wasn’t metal…. Rightfully so, my roommates thought there was something wrong with me. See, I have poor circulation and a medical problem that causes me to always feel cold. Obviously I can’t get one of these big heaters for my house, especially since I try to respect my husband’s comfort, so looked for something that would work for both of us.
Then I found it. The Dyson Hot + Cool fan heater. Yes, you read that right. Hot. And. Cold. Not only can I blast the heat in my direction when I’m cold, but we can turn on the cool air fan when it gets too hot in the house.
What I Love
I have been using our Dyson AM09 hot and cold Fan Heater just about every day now. Instead of adjusting our thermostat daily with these roller coaster temperature changes, I just turn on the Dyson to fan or heater. Today it’s on heater since it’s f-f-f-freeeezing (yes, I’m from Wisconsin and I should be used to it…but I’m acclimated to the South now.) How is your weather today? Would you need to turn on the fan or the heater?
When you turn on the heater, the power button lights up red. You can adjust the temperature to the temperature you want the house to reach. The heat will blow continually until it reaches the selected temperature or you turn it off. Once the room has reached the temperature on the display, the little red light next to the numbers will turn off, but the fan will still be on and kick in again once the temperature in the room drops. This is a great energy-saving option. Right now I have mine set at 81ºF because our house loses heat quickly and I can get it to blow continually at that setting.
On the cool fan setting, the power button will light up blue. Unlike the heater where you set a temperature, there are ten levels for the fan.
The fan comes with a remote that allows you to adjust your Dyson AM09 fan heater from a distance. It has settings for power, adjusting the temperature, adjusting how the air blows (fanned out in the diffused mode or streamlined and focused for further reach) with the “Jet Focus” control, setting a timer, or choosing if your hot and cold heater will stand still or oscillate back and forth.
Here’s something I found especially cool: the remote stores nicely on top of the Dyson fan heater! It follows the curvature of the top and holds in place magnetically. I’m curious to know if this is how the remote charges too. It sure seems like it.
Another thing I am in love with are the Dyson AM09 safety features. There are no blades which, as a mom, I know is especially important when you have curious kids. I also found that the inside of the heater will not burn your hands with a quick touch because there are no visible heating elements, if a child accidentally puts his hand inside. Now, if you let your hand just sit there, it may burn you. I don’t recommend that. But just touching it like a kid might, it didn’t hurt at all. I put my hand right on in there to show you the safety of it, but I would say you probably shouldn’t just sit there with your hand in there, just because. The fan will also cut off power if tipped over. Trust me, my toddler tried it already.
The fan is also super quiet! Bonus! This, along with the intelligent timer, allow you to safely and comfortably use your hot and cold fan at night.
The Dyson AM09 fan heater also has a tilt option so you can direct the heat or cold where you need it most. I like to tilt it down towards my feet when they are extra cold. Usually I have it pointed straight out so it heats or cools the whole room evenly, but sometimes I will tilt it upwards so it blows more into the center of the room.
This fan also stands up to a beating. I’m not sure why my toddler loves it so very much, but he sets toy cars on the top and lets them drop down the side daily. It’s a giant bridge or hill to him. He’s done a lot to this fan heater and there isn’t a scratch on it!
What I’m Not Huge On
I would really love to see the fan adjust options that are available on the remote available on the actual heater base too. The only thing I’ve been able to adjust on the heater itself is the power and sometimes my son hides the remote away so I can’t adjust the settings until I locate it.
The only other thing we had a slight issue with, at least initially, was our power cutting in and out when it turned on. Now, we have not had this issue since and our neighborhood went through a stage of intermittent power outages recently, so it may have been related to that, but it usually only happened when the fan kicked on. I will admit as well that we have a lot of things running on the same circuit. Our entire bottom floor only has two circuits so all three of our fish tanks, my computer, a lamp, sometimes a baby monitor, our internet, and sometimes our electric fireplace are all hooked onto the same one. Once we are able to move to another house, I really don’t think that would be an issue at all because we should have more circuits or will have the ability to mess with the wiring. As I mentioned before, I have had the fan heater running daily almost since we received it and it only did this the first few times, yet we still have everything hooked up as before.
Overall, this is a great product and would be the perfect gift for loved ones who always need heat, a fan blowing, or live somewhere with crazy climate changes. It is efficient because you can use it all year round and weather the changes in…well…weather. So versatile and really high quality. It has been incredibly useful for us already!
When I am super chilly and my husband wants to keep the thermostat on a cooler setting, we no longer have to “fight” for our comfort because we have the Dyson AM09 Hot + Cool fan heater to keep us just as warm or cool as we need.
