My baby is eating “big kid foods” now, but he still likes to eat “mush” sometimes. Since most store-bought versions are expensive or contain icky preservatives, I wanted a way to quickly and easily prepare baby foods at home using fresh fruits and vegetables. Nuby Garden Fresh Steam n Mash was my answer.
The Nuby Steam n Mash system comes in two color combinations–green and orange or green and pink. We received the green and orange and its vibrant colors are so much fun. The bowl holds about 9 oz and the basket holds about 1 cup of food.
What I Love
The Garden Fresh Steam n Mash system is so simple to use. All I had to do was add pieces of the fruits/vegetables I wanted to steam inside the basket, add a few tablespoons of water, place the lid on the top, and microwave for a few minutes until tender. I could then hold the lid on and drain the excess water out through the spout, empty the basket into the bowl area and mash like I would with potatoes!
While I may not have gotten 1st foods consistency, this is perfect for babies who are starting to eat little bits of foods. My baby is past this, of course, but he loves when we make applesauce with chunks in it so this is perfect.
I love that this food system is versatile. I used it for chunks of apples and for grapes (I bet you could make jam with this!) and later I will try it with some vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower. You don’t even have to use the mash part if your baby is eating regular foods, you can still use this as a steamer to cook vegetables in a snap.
This product is also BPA FREE as well as dishwasher and microwave safe. It has a textured interior to help with the puree process and it still cleans out easily.
What I’m Not Huge On
The only thing I had any issue with was that the plastic can get pretty hot to the touch. Of course, this is totally reasonable as it is microwaved for several minutes, but I did want to empty the basket immediately so the food was still warm when I mashed it.
Overall, the Nuby Steam n Mash is great for parents who want to make homemade, healthy baby food. It is quick and easy to use and stores well.
