Mustela Skincare #Review

Disclaimer: I participated in an Influencer Program on behalf of Mom Central Consulting
for Mustela. I received product samples to facilitate my review and to thank me for participating.

mustela skincareFinding skincare products that are both safe and effective can be quite a task, especially when it comes to products for a new baby and pregnant or nursing mama and even moreso when mama and baby have sensitive skin. Thankfully, Mustela carries a line of products specifically for babies and mommies and I was able to try it out!

Mustela, a trusted name in skincare for over 60 years and the number one baby and stretch marks brand in Europe, has reformulated BĂ©bĂ©, their line of baby skincare products, after 10 years of skin research. Their BĂ©bĂ© products now contain Avocado Perseose, a patented next generation protection ingredient that helps to protect baby’s skin from the very beginning. Mustela seeks to offer only products that are proven and tested under dermatological control to be safe, gental efficient, and natural.

My family and I were able to test Mustela Stretch Marks Care Oil as well as some of the reformulated BĂ©bĂ© line. We have used the products for a little over a week now and are enjoying using them. Some of the products we received to sample include: Hydra BĂ©bĂ© Body Lotion, 2 in 1 Hair and Body Wash, Stretch Marks Care Oil, Facial Cleansing Cloths, and Hydra Stick with Cold Cream Nutri-protective.

Hydra Bébé Body Lotion

mustela bebe hydrabebe body lotionFor the most part, my baby and I enjoyed the Hydra BĂ©bĂ© Body lotion from Mustela; it kept his skin moist and soft and soaked in well without becoming sticky. This lotion specially-formulated for delicate newborn skin not only moisturizes, but it also reinforces your infant’s skin barrier for extra protection. It contains 88% natural ingredients including Jojoba oil, Vitamins E and F, Sweet Almond Oil, and Shea Butter. It is paraben, phthalate, phenoxyethanol free as well as hypoallergenic to reduce allergic reactions. Unfortunately for me, while the lotion is hypoallergenic when in contact with the skin, the scent sent a small allergic reaction my way. My husband enjoyed the smell and my kids did not seem to mind it, but it was just a little bit too strong for me.

2 in 1 Hair and Body Wash

mustela bebe 2 in 1 hair and body washWe loved the 2 in 1 Hair and Body Wash. After finding out that Johnson & Johnson products contain formaldehyde, we have been trying out safer products for our little man. This Mustela product works great for me because it is effective both on his body and his soft hair so it saves me time using one product for everything rather than fussing with multiple products. While my son enjoys bath time, we try to keep it short so he doesn’t get chilly since he is too young to be in a full tub of water so a faster routine that still gets him clean is essential. The 2 in 1 Hair and Body Wash is soap-free and tear-free and specially formulated with surfactants to provide a gentle cleanse and preserve the skin’s film from birth on. A full 92% of the ingredients are natural and it is paraben, phthalate, and phenoxyethanol free as well as hypoallergenic. I can honestly say I feel safe and satisfied using the Mustela 2 in 1 Hair and Body Wash on my baby.

Stretch Marks Care Oil

mustela bebe stretch marks care oilThe Mustela Stretch Marks Care Oil is made to help prevent and minimize new and recent stretch marks during pregnancy and after birth. It has 100% natural oils and 99% natural ingredients; it is also free of parabens, phthalate, phenoxyethanol, alcohol, and colorants as well as being hypoallergenic. Tested under dermatological and gynecological care, the Mustela Stretch Marks Care Oil is non-teratogenic and compatible with pregnancy and breastfeeding. While I am not currently pregnant in need of preventing new stretch marks, I have been using Mustela Stretch Marks Care Oil on my newer stretch marks from after my youngest. While I have not noticed a big change in appearance, my skin definitely feels moisturized and supple after use so I believe this would do a great job preventing new stretch marks. The oil has a subtle floral scent that did not bother my allergies too much, however I would personally prefer it unscented. The bottle is a spray bottle which I did not have too much luck with as it came out in large, concentrated amounts, so I believe a non-spray container would work better. The oil was a little bit sticky to start, but if you catch the oil before it drips away and massage it  well it soaks in quickly. I was also sent the Mustela 9 Months Stretch Marks Intensive Action lotion which is more effective on the older stretch marks so I have been using this as well (read further for more information about this product.)

Facial Cleansing Cloths

mustela bebe facial cleansing clothsMustela products are great for the whole famiy! My older son tends to get his face even messier than the baby right now so we tried the Facial Cleansing Cloths on him. They worked well to quickly remove the yuck and were soft and gentle on his skin. Usually it is a mini battle to get my son’s face wiped down, but he did not mind the Mustela cloths which resulted in a soft, clean face and happy mama. The package is made for easy cloth dispensing which works great for on-the-go. It contains 25 one-step cleansing cloths. Ninety-eight percent of the ingredients in the Mustela Facial Cleansing Cloths are natural including Allantoin and Aloe vera to leaf extract which are meant to soften, smoothe, and moisturize. The gentle surfactants keep the natural oils from the skin in tact. Once again, this product is free of parabens, phthalate, and phenoxyethanol as well as hypoallergenic, though the scent was a bit strong for me just like the lotion was. These cloths are perfect if your little one tends to spit up, drool, wipe around boogies, or make a mess with food–I think that pretty much covers every baby!

Hydra Stick with Cold Cream Nutri-protective

mustela bebe hydra stick with cold cream nutri-protectiveOut of all the products I tested, the Hydra Stick with Cold Cream was my very favorite. My lips get extremely chapped year-round as do my kids’ lips. My oldest tends to grab my chapstick and use it, but I do not feel comfortable using my adult chapstick on my baby. I am happy to have found a product that I can use for my infant to give him relief from his dry lips; this product is safe from birth on. The Hydra Stick with Cold Cream also works on chapped cheeks. This product is made from 88% natural ingredients including ceramides and shea butter that work together to replenish lipids to protect the skin and create a barrier against cold, wind, and other conditions as well as promote moisture by softening and smoothing. I feel comfortable knowing this product is also hyperallergenic and free of parabens, phthalate, and phenoxyethanol. The Hydra Stick with Cold Cream comes in a handy container that is perfect for travelling and carrying in your purse or diaper bag.

Q&A with Dr. Mona Gohara

I was privileged with the opportunity to conduct a short phone interview with board-certified dermatologist Dr. Mona Gohara. Below you will find a paraphrased overview of our question and answer period regarding a few skincare topics.

Q: Ever since my youngest son I have been struggling with an extra outburst of acne, probably due to hormones and breastfeeding; how can I safely clear up my face while nursing and not dry out my skin while I do it?

A: While there is really nothing you can use topically for acne while nursing without first consulting your pediatrician and gynecologist, there are a few lifestyle changes that could help in acne prevention. Make sure you are well-nourished. Eat a low glycemic diet filled with proteins and healthy fruits and vegetables. RELAX. Stress releases cortisol which can result in the creation of more acne so find something that will lower your stress.

Q: My baby has Cradle Cap (whitish/yellowish flakes on baby’s scalp and face); what is the safest way to treat this?

A: Cradle Cap is believed to be an overgrowth of yeast caused by excessive oils on the scalp. Mustela actually carries products with ingredients that target and treat this. Mustela Stelaker is a cream that helps to remove cradle cap quickly by restoring the skin’s balance and limiting the growth of micro-organisms called malassezia furfur. Mustela also carries a Foam Shampoo for Newborns that helps to remove cradle cap using a special formula containing the patented Avocado Perseose (protects your baby’s skin barrier,) Salicylic acid (eliminates cradle cap through gentle exfoliation,) Climbazole (an antimicrobial that removes impurities,) and gentle surfactants (cleanse while keeping the skin’s natural oils in tact.)

**We have been trying out the Mustela Stelaker and Foam Shampoo for Newborns with our baby boy and have seen a noticeable reduction in his Cradle Cap, not just over time, but also immediately after use.

Q: I really don’t mind having stretch marks, but I also wouldn’t mind having them gone; is there anything I can do to get rid of the old stretch marks that have become “shiny”?

A: Yes. Mustela carries a product called 9 Months Stretch Marks Intensive Action that not only helps to prevent new stretch marks, but also minimizes the appearance of old stretch marks. This lotion contains AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids,) silicium, and Vitamin B5 which help to stimulate and promote skin cell and tissue regeneration while remodeling the “skin support” fibers collagen and elastin. Mustela 9 Months Stretch Marks Intensive Action is safe to use while breastfeeding.

**While I have not used the Mustela 9 Months Stretch Marks Intensive Action long enough to really see a difference yet, I have definitely noticed a slight reduction in the newer stretch marks where I have applied it.

  1. You have great models.

  2. We use the dermo cleansing gel for hair and body for years (since our daughter was about 11 months old). So glad we found a paraben, phtalate free product. She is now 4, but I just have not found a fragrance free product that I trust and like as much as the Mustela.
